Session Three: Exploring Web 2.0 Tools
Identify one or more Web 2.0 tools you're listing in your Lesson Plan Template
and describe the changes you will make in your classroom to accommodate these
tools.
I will be using a Voki Avatar, and an Animoto in my lesson plans. This will be my first time using them ever! I have to be completely honest, I am terrified. It is so out of my comfort zone, as we all know technology is only as good as we are using it! I will have to make many personal changes in my classroom to accomadate these web 2.0 tools! I will have to practice and become more comfortable with the use of these things. Our internet at our school is also another problem. It is always hit or miss as to when we have connection. I will have to introduce these to my students and I will have to be very understanding to thier confusion and needs, because I will be the same way. It will absolutely be a learning experience for all of us. I am anxious, in a bad but good way! WE CAN DO IT!
Kathleen, Internet is always hit or miss in every school, but we are supposed to pretend that is not an lesson plan weeks ahead for computer lab time and assume it's going to work that way. Don't be so hard on yourself. It cannot be helped. My advice to you to let the students know the situation. Let them know that you're trying something new and problems could arise. You would be surprised how much they would appreciate your honesty and how compassionate they can be when you're on the level with them.
Aaron, don't worry, I alwaays try to be very honest with my students as to me learning new technology and they find it humourous when something happens, so it makes it aa fun learning experience!! Thank you so much for this advice!
Boomwriter.com is the tool that I am going to be using with my 7th Grade Teacher to help make writing (which is mandatory) more interesting for her students. It also will help the students prepare for the WV Online Writing Assessment which will be coming up soon.
I just finished the schedule for our on line writing. I will share this site with our teachers. We ranked 3rd in improvement last year in WV High school, and 11th overall. I have set a top 10 goal for our students and will tell them this will help.
I have been working with my students this week on setting up Webtop accounts and they have also set up accounts with Voki. They think it is the most amazing thing! I know a lot of my students have problems giving presentations and I think avatars take a lot of the pressure off. The information is still presented, and the students are still in charge of what information gets presented which is important. My students will also be using a lot of what Webtop has to offer: Google Drive, Manhattan Virtual Classroom, Google Sites, and ePearl. This is the first "virtual classroom" experience my students have ever had, and they are very excited about having the freedom to control their education.
Vokis are really cool but I want to warn you about something. Because it is computer generated, it doesn't understand all our English rules and so it pronounces words as they are spelled and so you want the students to be careful because what they write and what it says can be two different things and can end up being embarrassing!
I really like how you are taking into account the students feelings. Shyness can as much of a deterrent as any developmental problem, and the Voki seems to be a way around that.
I think the idea of a class blog is wonderful. I would implement a class blog at the beginning of a school year. I would ask the students to describe something about themselves and maybe what they did over the summer. Just something simple so they could learn how to use a blog. I would then use the blog for things such as project discussions.
Since I am not in a classroom this is an "imaginary" lesson plan. I am using Voki to have the students redo a report they have already done in History. They each have their own laptop so it should be easier to do this. I will have to make sure I know what I am doing so I can instruct them. We will have to work around the times we cannot get a connection to the internet but other that that I don't forsee any problems.
As I am not in a classroom right now, I am going to be using a previous group of lessons on Animal Habitats. I will be introducing and using Animoto to have the students do presentations on different animal habitats. I will have to walk the students through this program and be available to help with any problems or concerns that might arise. I have never done anything like this and am a little worried that it won't go well. I will also need to practice making presentations with it as well so I know it inside and out to be a support to the students.
I am going to use an old Driver Education plan that I use to use as a class project with my Driver Education classes. The only technology that I use to use were search engines to find maps and places to stay. I am going to add xtranormal video, yahoo ratings for Hotel rooms, and downloading a mapquest map to a cell phone. I am going to give this lesson my current Driver Education teacher and suggest he use it. He sometimes thinks technology for him is a radio or Garmin.
I also reworked my driver education lesson plan. I found a short cnn video for them to watch about distraction driving and then I found two computer simulations that allows them to practice driving and texting. Here are the links if you would like to look at them: http://headsup.discoveryeducation.com/ http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/07/19/technology/20090719-driving-game.html
I have listed Epals, Google Earth, and Google as the tools students will use in the lesson plan from my template. As I substitute, I do not currently have my own classroom and am not teaching French. If I had a French classroom, however, all students would need access to computer for this project (students research and present a specific region of France). This would probably mean scheduling time in the school’s computer lab. More classes are starting to have mobile computer labs, which would be ideal. If we did have a mobile computer lab, I would also arrange the seating in the room so cooperative learning groups were seated together. For the presentation of the finished product, the room would have to have a Smartboard and computer.
I think I'd like to cry fowl! I want to use Facebook and YouTube. These top 10 were 3 or 4 years ago. I think over that time, at least for the college students, Facebook and Youtube have moved in to big spaces of their time and use. If I'm forced to pick one from the list.... I think a personal blog. It's forming in my mind like this... Recorded presentations posted on YouTube in a Private account. Links and comments and conversation on Facebook. Original content created and posted on their personal blogs. This could be easier to get off the ground next year. Turns out all the students will be gifted IPads except the Seniors within a semester of graduation... (And they aren't happy.)
Sorry, I posted similarly in session 1 thinking I was in session 3.
I believe most of us are thinking in the term of public schools, but it dawned on me how home school parents could benefit from this course. A lot of the Apps could enhance the student’s technology skills at home. No one needs to miss out on the future of technology just because they are not in a group setting. Parents can broaden their child’s technology skills by having them create and present to other family members. Most grandparents are thrilled when a child wants to share their experiences and the child actually gets to teach. I would use Kerpoof in an attempt to broaden the literary skills of my students. I have seen the excitement of a student that has had their literary vision turned on in the classroom. There is no greater reward in teaching.
I never thought about it for homeschooling either! Such a great idea! And I liked Kerpoof too! I had never heard of it before and I thought it was such a neat website. I have a 5 yo and I think I'm going to let her play around on it! =)
Thanks! Makes me feel better that I'm not the only person to post the wrong day..... At least I can tell the students I've been tripped up by some of the same things that they will experience. Too bad this doesn't spell check....
If I was in the classroom I would have students create a Voki.I would put them in groups and have them work together and chose an article from the newspaper. Not only are they using technology but they are also learning about current events. Hands-on and collaberative learningkeeps students motivated to learn.
I am, like a good bit of my classmates, currently a substitute teacher without a classroom; so this lesson plan is hypothetical. I found a lesson plan for Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. It called for creating a compilation CD to create a more earthly version of the novels science fictional race the Tralfamadorians View of art. Although this lesson plan called for downloading music, I believe the use of Animoto could be used to create the CD album cover and liner notes (which is a sneaky way of having them create short essays on the music they chose). I also think this is a way for them to learn how to ethically download music. A new experience for a good bit of them probably. As far as changes go for the classroom, Huntington high school (the school I sub at the most) is full of computers. I should not have a problem there in my make-believe classroom.
I am not currently in a classroom but for the lesson plan I am doing, I will be having students use both a blog to review and discuss The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (which will be read together). And at the end of the section I will have students use Kerpoof and create their own story. This lesson is geared towards a 6th grade Language Arts class.
I am also using Kerpoof in my lesson plan. It is so bright and colorful that it gets the students attention, and they want to learn. I think it is great for all ages!
I would be interested in seeing what they would write in a blog about The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe as it is one of my favorite books. Kerpoof would be a fun way to create a story as opposed to sitting in front of a blank sheet of paper hoping for inspiration.
I have 25 second graders this year in my class. All of these web 2.0 tools are new to me, and since I joined this class I have learned a lot. Like I said in my first blog I was use to ipods, ipads, computers, tech steps, WV writes, and smartboard activities but not the type of tools I have learned about in these last few weeks. I have tried Kerpoof as a whole group activity on the smartboard. I would like to take it a step forward and all my students create a story on Kerpoof and a slideshow about their story on Animoto. However, I am starting small with one of my friend's children, who is also in my classroom, I tutor in the evenings. After we complete the project I plan to show my regular classroom the project then do one with them as a whole group. By the end of the year the vision is for all of the students to create a digital story and slide show. It is a big vision for a teacher and 25 active 8 year olds.
Its always good to "test" your plan first if you have an opportunity to do so, and it sounds like you have the perfect opportuntity to do just that with the tutoring student.
I am going to have my students conduct a live video conference using Skype, ePal, or other video chat program as part of their visual/oral presentation project. I don't expect to have to make too many changes to the original lesson. The few changes I will have to make will be to include this component into the rubric and directions sheet. Also, I will want to find out who they will be video conferencing with and what their importance to the topic will be. Students will be using my LCD projector, laptop, and speakers to conduct their presentations, which is the same set up I use when giving notes, showing maps, visuals, etc. So, no change in the classroom setup. I'm looking forward to these presentations.
I am going to have my music students create a podcast about a film composer. As my students are in an institution and very limited to outer access and streaming I will have to download the assignments instead of posting them. They will learn how to post but not actually do it. At first I thought I shouldn't do the assignment since they can't stream, use email or anything of that nature but then I decided go ahead with it and see what happens.
I am going to be using Glogster with my Civics classes to make interactive posters on the different types of Political Ideologies. This past week I used Glogster for the first time with my Economics class on a similar topic and it has worked remarkably well and the student's love it. I have become familiar with many different Web 2.0 tools in the past few years and didn't realize it, so I am comfortable with using technology in the classroom and can't see any necessary changes I need to make.
I am going to use Kerpoof with my imaginary 7th grade language arts class. My plan is to read a selection of short stories in a variety of genres and then as the culminating activity have them create and illustrate their own story using Kerpoof's design studio. They can pick the genre style that they liked best from our study. This activity fits in perfectly with 7th grade CSOs and is a nice switch up from pencil and paper writing.
I love how much I am learning in this class! I had no idea there were so many different Web 2.0 tools out there! I am so amazed and excited. I can't wait to use so many of them. I have already signed up for a skype account as well as signed up for an epals account for my class. I have so many ideas running through my head that I could do with just these two things!
I also am very interested in using Web 2.0 tools for digital storytelling. With first graders, being able to compose a story with a beginning, middle, and ending and then illustrate it can be overwhelming, but using some of the technology that I am learning about will make it so much easier for my students!
I am going to use www.classchatter.com in my lesson plan. I have always enjoyed the privacy of the online blogging site which has been designed specifically for classrooms.
There are so many useful tools out there that the resources are endless in this day and time. I plan to use the boomwriter.com site to for my teachers to enhance their students writing skills to better prepare them for WV Writes and the WESTEST II online writing test coming up in a few months. I also like the idea of using a class blog. This would be an excellent way for teachers to get to know their students and students to get to know each other.
I plan on using Edmodo.com in my classroom next year. I can see that this will be a way we can communicate easily with each other, especially those that are in out-of-school placements. Students can write about what their SkillsUSA projects are and how they are progressing as well as this can be a place to discuss our school network and infrastructure where our other computer classes can also participate (i.e. the CISCO networking class and the Computer Repair & Networking class). I would also like to find a way to use the Voki site. I've used xtranormal.com in the past, which is similar to Voki, to make a 3-minute video on the Acceptable Use Policy. I'm thinking that my students could do a better job at this.
Since I am not in a classroom my lesson plan is also hypothetical. Since I live in Cabell county every year my children visited the West Virginia Pumpkin Park during the Pumpkin Festival. My lesson is called "A Day at the West Virginia Pumpkin Festival. The students will form teams and collaborate on creating a presentation in the form of a newscast highlighting their visit. They will be required to take pictures and/or video during their visit. Background for the visit will include reviewing newscasts to study format and content, reviewing privacy concerning using people in presentations, and using graphic organizers to brainstorm and plan their visit. During the creation of their presentations they will continue to use graphic organizers to develop their presentation and use Glogster or another Web 2.0 tool to create the presentation. The presentation will then be posted to classroom webpage.
i attended a work shop with Mr. carter and follow him on twitter, I really like what they are doing with technology here. http://www.etech.ohio.gov/digital-learning-day-model-sites
I am really anxious to use boomwriter with my students with my lesson plan. Voki, has already been introduced and the kiddos absolutely love her. I created her to look like me and they think that's really awesome, they say. LOL.. Boomwriter I thought would assist with the kids creative minds. They need to focus on their writing and not their neighbor. My Lesson will be on Bullying with Voki and then use boomwriter to assist with even more of their creative mind. I have already downloaded some of the APPS that we will be learning about next week. Sorry,I got excited about that and had to share.
By using Voki to verbally report on class collaborative database results, students can let loose of all fear of public speaking. They will be able to speak through an avatar they creatively design and give a voice to.
I will be using Voki and YouTube. I use Voki for my staff newsletters and I have seen other teachers use this in their classroom. I especially like seeing the Autism teacher use this. I use YouTube a lot for meetings and to learn new ideas.
After reading some of the posts I have found Boomwriter.com. My students hate to write so this might help want to write more. It is getting closer to Westest writing assessment and this is just what I needed.
I am planning to use the google surveys that we discussed. With these surveys,I will be able to conduct a pre and post test for my students and have instant access to the results. It will allow me to get the information needed with out grading time bogging the busy schedule down. It would be able to be done during class or on the students own time when they have access to the internet.
DeleteDo you use SAS Curriculum Pathways? They have a writing reviser (I think that it is QL# 1242) that is really helpful as well.
DeleteThank you for this great idea. All of my students complain about writing, so maybe if I can make it more interesting they will work harder.

ReplyDeleteTony,
DeleteThis sounds great, I will have my school utilize boomwriter.com.
I looked at this site today and I love it.
DeleteI plan on using Edmodo.com in my classroom next year.

I am really anxious to use boomwriter with my students with my lesson plan. Voki, has already been introduced and the kiddos absolutely love her. I created her to look like me and they think that's really awesome, they say. LOL..
ReplyDeleteBoomwriter I thought would assist with the kids creative minds.
ReplyDeleteI will be using Voki and YouTube. I use Voki for my staff newsletters and I have seen other teachers use this in their classroom. I especially like seeing the Autism teacher use this. I use YouTube a lot for meetings and to learn new ideas.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading some of the posts I have found Boomwriter.com. My students hate to write so this might help want to write more. It is getting closer to Westest writing assessment and this is just what I needed.
ReplyDeleteI am planning to use the google surveys that we discussed. With these surveys,I will be able to conduct a pre and post test for my students and have instant access to the results. It will allow me to get the information needed with out grading time bogging the busy schedule down. It would be able to be done during class or on the students own time when they have access to the internet.
